Background and History

Recovery 2000 incorporated as a 501© (3) non-profit organization in 1997, Spearheaded by  Isaetta Walton (Founder and Executive Director), a group of African American women affected by substance abuse, and individuals working in the field found that substance abuse was prevalent on Chicago's south side, but these women were under served.   After holding a series of meetings with community folk voicing their concerns regarding the growing problem became the impetus for a grass root organization to come into being with assistance from other volunteers.  The organization operated as a one person operation providing a phone hot line for counseling substance abusers, and making referrals to treatment centers and shelters and providing clothing for the homeless.  As HIV/AIDS became an epidemic in the African American community Recovery 2000 expanded it’s services to include HIV/AIDS and other chronic diseases.
